New Jersey Coastguard ‘Safety @ Sea’ Initiative to launch at 2018 Barclays Jersey Boat Show

As part of its ongoing ‘Safety @ Sea’ campaign, Jersey Coastguard will be launching a new ‘Advice on-board’ initiative at the 2018 Barclays Jersey Boat Show.

‘Advice on Board’ is a free and informal one-to-one consultation service open to all local boat owners and watercraft users that covers safety related topics, including appropriate equipment advice, safety and emergency procedures. It is available to both experienced and novice boat owners. In addition, the service will be available to anyone that takes to the water using personal watercraft to discuss safety aspects, including kayaks and stand up paddle boards.

Deputy Coastguard & VTS Manager, Bjorn Risebrow, explains, “Colleagues from both Jersey Coastguard and Jersey Marinas have received appropriate training from the RNLI on how to deliver this safety initiative and we are now in a position to offer this scheme to the public. The RNLI has also trained our Jersey Coastguard officers in providing advice on maintaining lifejackets, although we continue to advocate taking lifejackets to a recommended servicing agent if required.”

To promote the new service, three Island Chandlers, South Pier, Jacksons Yacht Services and Normans Auto-Marine will provide a discount on recommended safety equipment to anyone who has participated in the ‘Advice on Board’ scheme.

Jersey Coastguard will also be promoting its Coastguard safety Identificastion Scheme (CSIS) for small watercraft, including kayaks, SUPs and dinghies. This free online registration scheme for registering craft means that in the event that it is found ‘abandoned’ at sea or washed up on a beach, Jersey Coastguard can save valuable time by being able to identify and notify the owner. Once registered an information pack, containg anm identification number sticker and handy sized rlebent safety advice will be sent to the owner.

Anyone interested in participating in either of these scheme can sign up with Jersey Coastguard Officers, who will be available on their Albert Pier stand throughout this weekend’s Barclays Jersey Boat Show (Saturday 05 – Monday 07 May18), or email
